Disc Golf Journey

How long have you been playing disc golf?

I have been playing disc golf for over 3 years now.

How did you get started with disc golf?

I got started playing disc golf while looking for something that had that competitive nature to it. I was a long time baseball player and no longer had a sport in my life which really was a missing part of my personality. Finding disc golf was a life changing thing that I will continue for as long as my body allows me.

Share some of your memorable disc golf moments…

My most memorable moments have been meeting and playing with some amazing people. I have found friends who I play with many times a week and we are able to critique and help each other out so much. They are someone who I’d want as my caddy anytime during a tournament round.

Some Random Personal Stuff

What do you do when you’re not playing disc golf?

If I’m not playing disc golf, I enjoy hanging out with my son and wife. If they are busy or working, I enjoy passing my time playing video games. I really enjoy RPG style games.

What is your absolute favorite food (something you couldn’t live without)?

Mexican food is and will always be my absolute favorite. I grew up in Oklahoma and really enjoyed Tex-Mex food.

What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant?

Favorite fast food joint is Birdcall. We are lucky to have one next to our house. It’s more like a boujee Chick-fil-a.

What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

Days of Thunder was always a huge favorite growing up as a kid. Most Tom Cruise movies and early Jim Carry movies like Liar Liar.

What are some of your favorite TV shows/series?

My all time favorite was Game of Thrones. I am also a big fan of Stranger Things, Sons of Anarchy and Rescue Me.

Do you have any pro or college sports teams you are fanatic about?

I am a huge sports fanatic. Football, I am loyal to the OU Sooners and the Dallas Cowboys. I am also loyal to Baker Mayfield and support any team he is on. Baseball, I will always root for my Texas Rangers. Basketball is between the OKC Thunder or the Dallas Mavericks. Hockey is definitely the Dallas Stars. I really enjoy watching combat sports as well. During the major international soccer events, I’ll tune in and watch some. Same with international racing.

In the Bag

What is the first disc golf disc that you ever owned?

The first ever discs were an Innova starter pack with a leopard, shark and aviar.

What are some of your favorite discs that are in your bag right now?

My must have discs in my bag right now are my raptors, athenas and zones. I have them all in multiple plastics and stabilities from captains, OS and first runs.

What else is always in your bag other than discs?

I tend to keep things simple for the rest of my bag. I carry a towel, chalk bag, range finder and a stretching band.

Disc Golf Courses

Do you have a course that you consider your ‘home course’? Tell us about it.

I live in the northern area of Colorado Springs so my two home courses are Cottonwood Creek and Rampart disc golf course.

What are a few of your favorite disc golf courses to play?

Bailey disc golf course will always be my favorite. It was where I learned to play this sport and being that far in nature was always a very peaceful experience.

What is a dream disc golf course for you that you hope to play someday?

Airborn Disc Golf Preserve because I gave my son his middle name Cale from Cale Leiviska.

Let’s Play Disc Golf

Do you have any pre-round or post-round rituals that you do when you play disc golf?

The only pre round ritual I do is warm up my shoulder with the stretch band and get some putting practice in. If the tournament has an open field, I enjoy getting some warm up throws in too.

Do you drink, smoke, snack, or partake in anything else while playing disc golf? What’s your go-to?

When I play my rounds, I keep it very clean. I have my water and occasional energy drink but I don’t bring snacks or alcohol during my rounds. I do not smoke either on or off the course.

Are you just a casual disc golfer? Do you participate in any local leagues? Do you compete in disc golf tournaments?

I consider myself a fully involved disc golfer. I play many casual rounds, partake in league tag matches and play as many tournaments in my local area. For the 2024 season, I plan on traveling to other areas in Colorado to play tournaments when I can.

Do you have any tips for aspiring disc golfers?

My biggest tip for aspiring disc golfers is to have patients. Form takes practice. If you neglect practice you can’t expect to see big gains. Putting is my biggest procrastination. I quit worrying so much about distance and started to focus on my putting and approach shots this year. Throwing 400+ means nothing if you can’t put your shots close and you can’t putt into the basket.

Disc Golf Fun Stuff

Do you have any favorite professional disc golfers that you follow?

Paul Ulibarri has been a favorite of mine from day one of getting into disc golf. I became a member of his Power Disc Golf Academy last year and his teachings have made big improvements to my game. I view him as a true ambassador to this sport.

Do you have any disc golf goals that you are trying to achieve?

The biggest goal I have is to be able to compete in the Open division in Colorado before I turn 40. I’m currently getting better and better in the MA2 division and hope to be competing in the MA1 division within the next two years.

Who do you typically play disc golf with?

My now really close friend Charles is my go to disc golf buddy. We met on the trilogy challenge two years ago, which was my first tournament when I moved to Colorado Springs. He is a guy originally from Texas and also is a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys. We instantly hit it off and I consider him an older brother.

My wife and son also love to join me on the course whenever they can. Misty doesn’t play but she has always been extremely supportive with my love for disc golf. Also having my son there helps calm down the frustrating moments. I truly can’t wait for the day I get to buy him his set of Dino Discs and we play our first round together.

What would a perfect disc golf round look like for you?

This is a very interesting question. The easy answer is shooting a perfect -18 but I focus more on the realistic side of things. Hitting my gaps off the tee, throwing my up shots within the circle and making each first putt attempt. If that only results in me shooting an even par, I’d still consider that a perfect round. Each round will always result in some room for improvement no matter the outcome.
