Meet Joseph Thomes (PDGA #230203)

Tell us about yourself! How old are you? Where do you live? What do you do (work/school/etc.)?

I’m Joey Thomes, 23 years old from Sauk Rapids Minnesota. I work as a Fleet mechanic on semi trailers for a trucking company. 

Tell us about the most important people in your life! Who do you live with (family, friends, etc.)?

The most important people in my wife would definitely be my girlfriend, and our son

Do you have a nickname or just something else that you go by?

My name is Joseph but I go by Joey or Joe 

Disc Golf Journey

How long have you been playing disc golf?

12 years, but only started playing seriously in the last 3 

How did you get started with disc golf?

My uncle and his longtime friend took me to play for the first time on a ski hill during the summer. Pretty epic but also pretty brutal for a first timer 

Share some of your memorable disc golf moments…

I would say waiting 10 years for my first ace, and then having it be with my best friend and long time disc buddy. Playing on a mountain in Montana was unbelievable 

Some Random Personal Stuff

What do you do when you’re not playing disc golf?

Play with my son, also love playing board games and anything that brings me outside, (camping, fishing, canoeing)

What is your absolute favorite food (something you couldn’t live without)?

French fries!

What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant?

McDonald’s, great stop after a road trip round with some buddies 

What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

The Outlaw Josey Wales, Forrest Gump, What’s eating Gilbert grape.

What are some of your favorite TV shows/series?

Parks and Rec, The office, Trailer Park Boys 

Do you have any pro or college sports teams you are fanatic about?

Not really

What is the first disc golf disc that you ever owned?

Axiom Hex 

What are some of your favorite discs that are in your bag right now?

AGL Locust and Sycamore 

What else is always in your bag other than discs?

Snacks and water, range finder, towels and dirt sack

Disc Golf Courses

Do you have a course that you consider your ‘home course’? Tell us about it.

Mayhew Creek DGC, A gold level 18 with a good mix of open and wooded holes. A tough track but really cool layout and shot shaping out there. 

What are a few of your favorite disc golf courses to play?

The Airbourne Preserve, Millstream Park, Becker city DGC 

What is a dream disc golf course for you that you hope to play someday?

Would really love to play Toboggan someday

Do you have any pre-round or post-round rituals that you do when you play disc golf?

Stretching!

Do you drink, smoke, snack, or partake in anything else while playing disc golf? What’s your go-to?

Do you have any tips for aspiring disc golfers?

Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, just do what works for you. And you don’t have to try as hard as you think

Do you have any disc golf goals that you are trying to achieve?

I’d love to win a tournament, and hopefully an A tier someday, and to be able to throw 450’ consistently backhand and 350 forehand 

Who do you typically play disc golf with?

Myself, or my closest friends 

What would a perfect disc golf round look like for you?

A quick smoke before the round, then a round at the Airbourne preserve with my 3 best friends
