Chad Rump – Goshen, IN

“I’m lucky to have 2 actually. I have Mullet Park and DISCiples. Both are 9 holes courses that are within 5 minutes of my house and attended by me several times a week. Mullet is the more technical 9 hole, including some wooded shots and a lot more trees. DISCiples is wide open and features a nice 700+ foot par 4 that is nice to judge progress in distance throwing. Some baby trees were planted so in a couple years the difficulty level there will increase…”

Welcome to another edition of our Disc Golf Player Profile publication – where we feature disc golfers that you may or may not have heard of before. Everybody has their own disc golf story to tell. This is the place where those stories are being told and shared with the world!

Meet Chad Rump (PDGA #176649)

Tell us about yourself! How old are you? Where do you live? What do you do (work/school/etc.)?

I’m 37 years old from Goshen, IN. I currently work in shipping for a company that produces cabinets and sends them across the country. Outside of work I love spending time with my wife and kids, throwing discs and generally being outside.

Tell us about the most important people in your life! Who do you live with (family, friends, etc.)?

My most important people are my wife and 3 kids.

Do you have a nickname or just something else that you go by?

Usually my last name becomes a nickname of sorts being how unique it is.

Disc Golf Journey

How long have you been playing disc golf?

2023 is my 3rd season playing this beautiful sport

How did you get started with disc golf?

My best friend played safari frisbee golf when he was in college. During covid he told me constantly that he was going to get me out on a course and play, since I have a love of being outdoors and playing ball golf. Finally towards the end of winter in 2021 he bought me my first disc as a way of getting me into it, and the rest as they say, is history

Share some of your memorable disc golf moments…

Finishing my last night of league last year by shooting the hot round is something I’ll remember.

Watched the same best friend that got me into the sport throw his first ace on our annual Summer Solstice 27 hole extravaganza

Randomly selecting a double tournament that is 90 minutes from my house with my best friend, and now our wives attend and we get away for a weekend once a year.

Some Random Personal Stuff

What do you do when you’re not playing disc golf?

Mostly spending time with my family. With them being 2, 4, and 6 they keep me pretty busy. I play a lot of Minecraft to relax, as well as enjoying a good movie. Recently have had some small success building random things out of used pallet wood.

What is your absolute favorite food (something you couldn’t live without)?

A nice thick, juicy double bacon cheeseburger. Complete it with some salty cheese fries.

What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant?

Taco Bell! I could eat it as often as possible.

What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

Toy Story is my all time favorite movie. I usually binge watch the entire MCU timeline every 16 months or so. Major League is a favorite of mine since my favorite baseball team is Cleveland, and thats the only way that I can see them actually win something big

What are some of your favorite TV shows/series?

FRIENDS, Breaking Bad, Brooklyn 99, Parks and Rec, Ted Lasso

Do you have any pro or college sports teams you are fanatic about?

Notre Dame for every college sport.

NFL – Chicago Bears, MLB – Cleveland Guardians.

In the Bag

What is the first disc golf disc that you ever owned?

Red Champion Tern

What are some of your favorite discs that are in your bag right now?

My tournament stamp Z Zone from my first doubles tournament with my best friend.

My 2 oldest kids did some sharpie art on some f2 Innova discs. Those will never leave my bag.

What else is always in your bag other than discs?

Whale Sak, marker because you never know when you’ll need to mark a disc or record an ace, water bottle, snacks

Disc Golf Courses

Do you have a course that you consider your ‘home course’? Tell us about it.

I’m lucky to have 2 actually. Some baby trees were planted so in a couple years the difficulty level there will increase.

The beautiful thing is both courses can be played solo in about 30 minutes, which leaves plenty of room for another round or multiple other rounds.

What are a few of your favorite disc golf courses to play?

Meyer Broadway in Three Rivers, MI

Johnson Park in Grand Rapids, MI

Baugo Creek in Osceola, IN (my first ever round was here and the reason it holds a special place in my heart)

What is a dream disc golf course for you that you hope to play someday?

Lots of varying shots. Calling for, or at least open to, multiple shot shapes. Very nice taken care of fairways as well as baskets/teepads. Varying distance. As someone that can barely throw 300ft it’s tough when the courses get so long.

Let’s Play Disc Golf

Do you have any pre-round or post-round rituals that you do when you play disc golf?

Mostly just stretching.

Do you drink, smoke, snack, or partake in anything else while playing disc golf? What’s your go-to?

Snacking is key. I’m always snacking even outside of disc golf so it’s no different. I also love to partake in some light hearted ribbing with my card mates.

Are you just a casual disc golfer? Do you participate in any local leagues? Do you compete in disc golf tournaments?

Yes. With my family I have to split time between being a casual and competitive. Currently do as many leagues and tournaments as I can, while still trying to be a supportive father/husband.

Do you have any tips for aspiring disc golfers?

Start small. Start the way that I learned ball golf. From the green backwards. Take it slow and don’t try to throw 500ft from the start. If you can afford it, get coaching.

Disc Golf Fun Stuff

Do you have any favorite professional disc golfers that you follow?

BigSexyBerry, Tattar, Rawnsley, J Allen,

Do you have any disc golf goals that you are trying to achieve?

Right now, getting consistent 350 distance and rating out of ma4 are my only goals

Who do you typically play disc golf with?

Myself or my friends Shawn and Chad

What would a perfect disc golf round look like for you?

I mean how can you not say 18 down right? Outside of that as long as it’s not an overly frustrating round, I can spend a couple hours with my friends and shooting the course record sounds fantastic to me
