Welcome to another edition of our Disc Golf Player Profile publication – where we feature disc golfers that you may or may not have heard of before. Everybody has their own disc golf story to tell. This is the place where those stories are being told and shared with the world!

Meet Andrew Martin (PDGA #175818)

Tell us about yourself! How old are you? Where do you live? What do you do (work/school/etc.)?

I am 32 years old and I live in Greenville, SC.

Tell us about the most important people in your life! Who do you live with (family, friends, etc.)?

My best friends are the people that actually introduced me to disc golf. We have a solid squad that fits in rounds as often as we can. We’ve taken several trips to courses out of state where we can camp and play on some beautiful properties. We have also made trips to a few different DGPT tournaments.

Do you have a nickname or just something else that you go by?

Most people call me Andy.

Disc Golf Journey

How long have you been playing disc golf?

I’ve been playing for a little over 3 years now.

How did you get started with disc golf?

A friend that i played rec soccer leagues with introduced me to more of his group of friends. They had all been playing disc golf for many years. They would invite me to join them, but it took me a while to take them up on the offer because I didn’t have any discs and had never played before. Once I finally got out on a course, I was hooked. I saw them throwing beautiful flex lines and draining 50 ft putts and I wanted to be able to do that. I’ve been obsessed ever since.

Share some of your memorable disc golf moments…

My first ace is probably my most memorable moment so far. I had to turn and look at the people I was playing with just to make sure someone else saw what I saw.

Some Random Personal Stuff

What do you do when you’re not playing disc golf?

I love the outdoors. My friends and I have several camping spots we enjoy hiking to. I love watching hockey, soccer, and college football during their respective seaaons. I enjoy running when it isn’t miserably hot outside as well. I’ve also been known to spend time on a variety of video games.

What is your absolute favorite food (something you couldn’t live without)?

I could eat sushi and sour gummy worms for the rest of my life.

What’s your favorite fast-food restaurant?

Chick-fil-A is top tier and no one can convince me otherwise.

What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

Treasure Planet, The LOTR Trilogy, both Spiderverse movies are great.

What are some of your favorite TV shows/series?

I’m wrapping up Suits for the 3rd time as I’m typing this. Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, and How I Met Your Mother are also favorites.

Do you have any pro or college sports teams you are fanatic about?

University of Georgia’s football team has been my top team since I was probably 5 years old. I catch as many Manchester United, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Yankees games as I can as well.

In the Bag

What is the first disc golf disc that you ever owned?

I bought about 9 discs when I finally got my own discs. My Westsode Discs Stag was my favorite pit of that lot.

What are some of your favorite discs that are in your bag right now?

I always have 3 Westside Harps in my bag (mega soft, soft, VIP-X glimmer), 2 Dynamic Discs Justices (soft, Lucid-X chameleon), an orbit Grace, and an Orbit Rive.

What else is always in your bag other than discs?

My Whale Sac is always in my bag, a kwik stick, multiple towels, and plenty of water

Disc Golf Courses

Do you have a course that you consider your ‘home course’? Tell us about it.

I live 5 minutes from Timmons Park here in Greenville. It’s not super long, but it’s pretty wooded like most courses are in the southeast.

What are a few of your favorite disc golf courses to play?

I love a good mix of wooded holes with technical shot shapes and open holes where I can air out a long forehand.

What is a dream disc golf course for you that you hope to play someday?

Maple Hill is at the top of my list right now.

Let’s Play Disc Golf

Do you have any pre-round or post-round rituals that you do when you play disc golf?

I try to get 15-20 putts in before each round. I usually throw about 3 forehand and 3 backhand shots as well on top of some stretches from Disc Golf Strong.

Do you drink, smoke, snack, or partake in anything else while playing disc golf? What’s your go-to?

A beer or 2 during a casual round is always nice. Crackers or some sort of beef jerkey have been my go-to snacks

Are you just a casual disc golfer? Do you participate in any local leagues? Do you compete in disc golf tournaments?

I started playing tournaments last year. My mental game was the biggest hurdle in those tournaments. I’ve gotten that under a little more control this year.

Do you have any tips for aspiring disc golfers?

Find your local club and let them know you’re new to the sport. You’ll meet some great people that are willing to help you learn and grow. Those people will turn into great friends. Most importantly, have fun.

Disc Golf Fun Stuff

Do you have any favorite professional disc golfers that you follow?

FPO: Kristin Tattar, Kat Mertsch, Holyn Handley

MPO: Calvin Heimburg, Simon Lizzotte, Gannon Buhr

Do you have any disc golf goals that you are trying to achieve?

I’ve been putting a lot of work into improving my backhand. I want to be comfortable throwing different disc angles so I can add a variety of different shots to my game.

Who do you typically play disc golf with?

I have a really good close group of friends I play with regularly.

What would a perfect disc golf round look like for you?

A good round for me is one where I’m confident in my disc choice and my lines and I can hit my lines consistently. The most important thing is having fun though.
